Ruchill Church Halls are up for sale

Category A listed buildings in Glasgow designed by renowned architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh are up for sale, with initial enquiries from potential buyers described as “very positive”.

These properties form part of what is described as a “block of three exceptional buildings”, two miles north-west of Glasgow city centre, being marketed by chartered surveyor David Allison & Company with a guide price of £350,000.

The chartered surveyor describes The Mackintosh Halls sale as a “truly unique opportunity to acquire a Rennie Mackintosh designed building”.

It notes various alternative uses for the block of buildings at 15/17 Shakespeare Street – subject to planning consent – flagging as examples “residential, offices, nursery, gym etc”.

David Allison & Company says the sale is “a truly unique opportunity to purchase a block of three exceptional buildings, which notably include a former hall of worship and an adjoining former janitor’s house, both designed by the celebrated architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and grade A listed; [and] in addition, a superb red sandstone former church building which is grade B listed.”

It adds: “The hall and janitor’s house contain a number of unique Mackintosh features including stained glass, carved doors, wall panelling, fireplaces, etc. The title to the subjects also includes a small area of land to the rear (south), which could potentially be separately accessed by a surfaced private road running along the east-most gable of the church.”

The Charles Rennie Mackintosh hall and janitor’s house were completed in 1899. The red sandstone adjoining church was designed by Neil Campbell Duff and completed in 1905. These buildings are linked by a red sandstone, Gothic-designed archway.

David Allison & Company says: “The buildings occupy a mixed commercial and residential location just off Maryhill Road and close to the Forth & Clyde Canal where there is a public car park and a bridge over the canal to Ruchill.”

David Allison, director of the firm, told The Herald: “Initial enquiries have been very positive and include an expanding church organisation looking at an additional location. I understand a nearby church was recently sold following a closing date for offers.
“The sellers are hoping for a sale of the whole, which includes a small area of land to the rear which could possibly be developed in some way.”
