Mackintosh in the Saleroom

In November a Charles Rennie Mackintosh cabinet made at Knockaloe WW1 internment camp for 78 Derngate proved the star lot in Lyon & Turnbull’s highly anticipated Decorative Arts: Design since 1860 auction. The cabinet had a pre-sale estimate of £10,000-£15,000 attracting bidders from around the world, eventually selling for £250,000.

Meanwhile, another work by one of the Glasgow Four – Mackintosh’s sister-in-law Frances Macdonald MacNair – sold for £125,000, more than 10 times the lower end of its estimated price of £10,000-£15,000. The signed pencil drawing known as Das Eigenkleid Der Frau (Women’s Own Dress) was a commission in 1903 from Anna Muthesius for a book cover.
